Goose belongs to an alien species called the Flerken. Although Goose appears to be an ordinary orange tabby cat, the creature is revealed in Captain Marvel to be a highly dangerous extraterrestrial predator with abilities far beyond those of a house cat.

Flerken can disguise themselves as cats, possess enormous internal storage capacity, and extend long, tentacle-like appendages from their mouths. Goose uses these abilities to attack opponents and swallow objects, including the Tesseract. The character’s harmless appearance is therefore a deliberate joke: other characters underestimate Goose because they see a familiar Earth animal.

Goose is named after the goose in Top Gun, reflecting Carol Danvers’s Air Force background. The character is also a nod to Chewie, a cat-like alien companion associated with Carol in Marvel Comics.
