Created by Tony Stark, J.A.R.V.I.S. is the artificial intelligence that manages Stark’s mansion, laboratory, company systems and Iron Man armor. The name is commonly expanded as “Just A Rather Very Intelligent System,” although different MCU reference materials have used slightly different wording for the acronym. The AI is voiced by Paul Bettany, who later also portrays Vision.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron attempts to destroy J.A.R.V.I.S., but the AI survives by distributing its consciousness across the internet. Stark and Bruce Banner recover its operational matrix and upload it into a synthetic vibranium body originally created by Ultron. The Mind Stone powers the body, while Thor’s lightning helps activate it, producing Vision.

J.A.R.V.I.S. is therefore not simply renamed Vision: Vision is a new synthetic being whose mind incorporates J.A.R.V.I.S. as its core software, along with the Mind Stone and other influences. After J.A.R.V.I.S. becomes Vision, F.R.I.D.A.Y. replaces him as Stark’s main armor assistant.
