In which year was The Avengers first released?

The story behind the answer

The Avengers was first released in 2012.

Marvel’s The Avengers premiered at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre on April 11, 2012, before opening theatrically in the United States on May 4. The film brought together heroes introduced in earlier Marvel Studios movies, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.

Joss Whedon wrote and directed the film. Its story follows Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. as they assemble the team to stop Loki, Thor’s brother, from conquering Earth with the Tesseract. The movie served as the culmination of Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The title can cause a regional mix-up: in the United Kingdom and Ireland, it was marketed as Marvel Avengers Assemble to distinguish it from the British television series and its 1998 film adaptation. Despite that alternate marketing title, the movie’s original release year remains 2012.
