Who was Nirvana’s original drummer when the band formed in 1987?

The story behind the answer

Aaron Burckhard was Nirvana’s original drummer when the band formed in 1987.

Burckhard played with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic during Nirvana’s earliest period in Aberdeen and nearby Washington communities. He was part of the group’s first lineup after Cobain and Novoselic began developing the band that would become Nirvana. The early lineup was unstable, and Burckhard soon left the group.

Nirvana went through several drummers before achieving international fame. Chad Channing played on most of Bleach, while Dave Grohl joined in 1990 and became the band’s final and best-known drummer. Dale Crover of the Melvins also played drums for Nirvana briefly in the group’s early history.

Because Channing and Grohl are more strongly associated with Nirvana’s recorded legacy, they are common wrong answers. The wording “original drummer” points to the first drummer in the band’s 1987 formation period, Aaron Burckhard.
