Andrew Wood was the lead singer of Mother Love Bone before the band dissolved in 1990. Wood had previously fronted Malfunkshun and became one of the central performers in Seattle’s developing alternative-rock scene.
Mother Love Bone released the Apple album in July 1990, but Wood died in March 1990 from a heroin overdose before its release. His death ended the band and deeply affected Seattle musicians, including his roommate Chris Cornell of Soundgarden.
Cornell responded by forming Temple of the Dog with members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, creating a tribute project for Wood. Wood is sometimes confused with later Seattle vocalists such as Layne Staley or Eddie Vedder, but neither was Mother Love Bone’s lead singer.
