Who co-founded Seattle’s Sub Pop record label with Bruce Pavitt?

The story behind the answer

Jonathan Poneman co-founded Seattle’s Sub Pop record label with Bruce Pavitt.

Poneman and Pavitt established Sub Pop Records in 1986, building on Pavitt’s earlier Sub Pop fanzine and compilation projects. The label focused heavily on independent music from the Pacific Northwest and became central to the rise of Seattle’s grunge scene.

Sub Pop released important early records by Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. Nirvana’s 1989 album Bleach was issued by Sub Pop, giving the label one of its most historically significant releases.

Poneman is sometimes confused with musicians associated with the label, such as Jack Endino, who produced or engineered several influential recordings. Poneman was an executive and co-founder, not a member of Nirvana or Soundgarden.
