Who produced Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind?
Answer
Butch Vig
Answer
Butch Vig
Butch Vig produced Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind. Vig recorded the album with Nirvana at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, and later helped shape its polished but forceful sound during mixing with Andy Wallace. The record became Nirvana’s breakthrough and a defining release of the grunge era.
Nevermind followed Nirvana’s 1989 debut album Bleach, which had been produced by Jack Endino. The band’s move to a major label, DGC Records, gave the group a larger recording budget and wider distribution. Vig’s production preserved the band’s aggressive guitars while making songs such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” accessible to a huge audience.
A common mix-up is naming Steve Albini, who produced Nirvana’s later album In Utero. Albini was not involved in producing Nevermind. Vig later became widely known as the drummer and producer of Garbage, the alternative rock band he formed with Duke Erikson and Steve Marker.
