Which waterfall in South Africa is formed by the Umgeni River near Howick?
Answer
Howick Falls
Answer
Howick Falls
Howick Falls is the South African waterfall formed by the Umgeni River near the town of Howick.
The waterfall is in KwaZulu-Natal, where the Umgeni drops about 95 metres over a sandstone cliff. The Zulu name is KwaNogqaza, commonly translated as “Place of the Tall One.” The site has long been associated with local traditions and the settlement that developed around the falls.
Howick Falls should not be confused with Tugela Falls in the Drakensberg or Augrabies Falls on the Orange River. Its flow can change significantly after rain, and the falls may appear relatively narrow during drier periods. A viewing area in Howick provides a clear perspective over the gorge and the main drop.
