Which waterfall on Ireland’s River Dargle drops 121 metres in County Wicklow?

The story behind the answer

Powerscourt Waterfall is the Irish waterfall on the River Dargle that drops 121 metres in County Wicklow.

It is widely described as the highest waterfall on the island of Ireland. The waterfall lies in the Wicklow Mountains on the Powerscourt estate, about 6 kilometres from the village of Enniskerry and southeast of Dublin. Its stream descends through a wooded valley before continuing as the River Dargle.

The waterfall’s setting has long been part of the Powerscourt estate landscape. The surrounding trees and mountain slopes are important to its character, and the view changes substantially with rainfall and season. After heavy rain, the flow is considerably stronger than during dry periods.

Powerscourt Waterfall should not be confused with Powerscourt House and Gardens, which are separate attractions on the wider estate. Nor is it Ireland’s best-known coastal cascade: that distinction is often associated with different scenic falls, while Powerscourt is notable for its height and inland Wicklow setting.
