Gocta Falls, also called the Gocta Cataracts, was publicized internationally after local residents guided German explorer Stefan Ziemendorff to the waterfall in 2005. It is near the village of Cocachimba in Peru’s Amazonas Region.
The waterfall has two main stages and was measured at roughly 771 metres in total height. Its international attention followed surveys and media reports that presented it as one of the world’s tallest waterfalls.
Gocta was not unknown to the people living nearby. The 2005 expedition brought wider geographic and tourism attention rather than discovering a previously unseen natural feature. Measurements of waterfalls can vary depending on whether separate stages, seasonal streams and uninterrupted drops are counted.
