Athirappilly Falls is widely regarded as Kerala’s largest waterfall by volume and is often called the “Niagara of India.”
The waterfall is on the Chalakudy River in Thrissur district, where the river drops about 24 metres over a broad rocky ledge. Its appearance changes substantially with the monsoon: heavy rain expands the curtain and increases the surrounding spray, while the dry season exposes more of the underlying rock.
Athirappilly lies within a forested landscape containing riparian vegetation and wildlife associated with the Western Ghats. The nearby Vazhachal Falls is another major attraction on the same river, but it is a separate waterfall.
The “Niagara of India” nickname is promotional rather than a formal geographic classification. It should not be confused with Jog Falls, India’s famous segmented waterfall in Karnataka, or Dudhsagar Falls in Goa.
