Which waterfall in Idaho is known as the “Niagara of the West”?
Answer
Shoshone Falls
Answer
Shoshone Falls
Shoshone Falls in Idaho is widely known by the nickname “Niagara of the West.”
The waterfall is on the Snake River in the city of Twin Falls, where the river drops about 65 metres over a broad volcanic-rock rim. Its height is greater than Niagara Falls, although its flow varies substantially with seasonal water management and river conditions.
The falls were created by basaltic lava flows and later shaped by erosion. They also lie within the geological landscape affected by the Bonneville Flood, a catastrophic Ice Age flood that carved channels across parts of the Pacific Northwest.
A common mix-up is confusing Shoshone Falls with nearby Perrine Bridge and Perrine-Coulee Falls. Perrine-Coulee is close to Twin Falls, but Shoshone Falls is the major Snake River cataract associated with the famous nickname.
