Which waterfall in Guyana is famous for having one of the world's highest single drops?
Answer
Kaieteur Falls
Answer
Kaieteur Falls
Kaieteur Falls in Guyana is famous for its exceptionally high single drop of about 226 metres.
The waterfall is on the Potaro River in Kaieteur National Park, within the Guiana Shield's rainforest landscape. The river plunges over a sandstone ledge into a deep gorge, creating a powerful isolated cascade rather than a broad multi-section waterfall. Its flow changes seasonally, but the drop remains the defining feature.
Kaieteur has cultural importance in local Patamona tradition. The name is linked to the story of Chief Kai, who is said to have sacrificed himself while canoeing over the falls to save his people. The waterfall was brought to wider international attention after its reported sighting by British explorer Charles Barrington in 1870.
Kaieteur is sometimes confused with Angel Falls because both are remote South American waterfalls with dramatic single drops. Angel Falls is much taller overall, while Kaieteur is known for combining a very high drop with substantial volume and a powerful river plunge.
