Fumaça Falls, or Cachoeira da Fumaça, is the waterfall reached by a trail through the Vale da Cachoeira da Fumaça in Brazil’s Chapada Diamantina. Its Portuguese name means “Smoke Waterfall.”
The waterfall is famous for a high drop in which wind can blow the falling water sideways before it reaches the valley floor. This effect creates the appearance of smoke or mist, especially when the flow is relatively light.
Fumaça Falls is in Bahia state, within the Chapada Diamantina region, an area of tablelands, canyons and distinctive sandstone landscapes. It should not be confused with Caracol Falls in Rio Grande do Sul or Iguaçu Falls on the Brazil–Argentina border.
