Weta Digital was the visual-effects company co-founded by Peter Jackson that worked on many of his Middle-earth films.
The New Zealand company created digital creatures, environments, battles, and character effects for Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit productions. Its work included the digital realization of Gollum and large-scale armies and landscapes that could not be filmed practically.
Weta Digital was founded in 1993 by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, and Jamie Selkirk, along with other partners. It was separate from Weta Workshop, which handled many practical design, costume, prop, and makeup tasks for Jackson’s films.
In 2022, Weta Digital’s visual-effects business became part of Unity and was renamed Weta FX. The earlier name remains the historically precise answer for the company associated with Jackson’s Middle-earth productions.
