The giant raven in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is named Roäc.
Roäc is the son of Carc and serves as a messenger for the ravens of the Lonely Mountain. He brings news to Thorin Oakenshield and helps connect the defenders of Erebor with the wider events surrounding the coming battle.
The name is easy to confuse with Gwaihir, the Lord of the Eagles in The Lord of the Rings films. Roäc is a raven, not an eagle, and he belongs specifically to the Hobbit storyline.
The character originates in Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Jackson’s adaptation expands the battle and its surrounding political conflict into the concluding film of the three-part series.
