What is the name of the dwarf leader played by Richard Armitage in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Thorin Oakenshield is the dwarf leader played by Richard Armitage in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.

Thorin leads the company of dwarves that travels with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf to reclaim Erebor, the Lonely Mountain. The trilogy comprises An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies, released from 2012 to 2014.

In the story, Thorin is the heir of Durin’s Folk and the rightful king under the mountain. His grandfather Thror ruled Erebor before the dragon Smaug drove the dwarves into exile. Thorin’s campaign is therefore both a military expedition and an attempt to restore his family’s kingdom.

Balin and Dwalin are members of Thorin’s company, not the leader. Thráin is Thorin’s father, whose disappearance forms part of the family history. Thorin’s epithet, Oakenshield, comes from his use of an oak branch as a shield during the Battle of Azanulbizar.
