Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has a theatrical running time of 169 minutes.
That length makes it the shortest theatrical installment of Jackson’s three Hobbit films, although it is still nearly three hours long. The film adapts the opening portion of J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel and introduces Bilbo’s journey with Thorin’s company.
The number is sometimes confused with the film’s extended-edition length. The extended edition adds additional material and runs longer than the theatrical release.
The film was also notable for its high-frame-rate theatrical presentations. Jackson presented selected screenings at 48 frames per second, twice the traditional 24-frame-per-second standard.
