Which Venezuelan waterfall is the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, plunging 979 metres from Auyán-tepui?

The story behind the answer

Angel Falls is the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, plunging 979 metres from Auyán-tepui in Venezuela.

The waterfall lies in Canaima National Park in Bolívar State. Its water drops from the summit of the sandstone plateau before becoming a fine mist during parts of the descent. The total elevation difference is 979 metres, while the longest uninterrupted drop is about 807 metres.

The waterfall’s Indigenous Pemon name is Kerepakupai Merú, commonly translated as “waterfall of the deepest place.” Its English name honors American aviator Jimmie Angel, whose 1937 landing on Auyán-tepui helped bring international attention to the site.

Angel Falls is sometimes confused with Tugela Falls, whose claimed height has occasionally challenged older rankings. The distinction matters: Angel Falls is generally recognized for the world’s highest single uninterrupted plunge.
