Which two countries share Niagara Falls?
Answer
United States and Canada
Answer
United States and Canada
Niagara Falls is shared by the United States and Canada, along the international boundary between Ontario and New York.
The waterfall system consists of three falls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Horseshoe Falls lies mainly on the Canadian side, while American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are on the United States side. The Niagara River carries water from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.
Niagara became a major tourism destination during the nineteenth century and later became an important source of hydroelectric power. Water diversions for electricity generation reduce the flow over the falls, especially at night and outside peak visitor periods. Both countries also use dams and control structures to manage erosion and flow.
A common mistake is to treat Niagara Falls as one single waterfall or to describe it as the world's tallest. It is neither: its importance comes from its powerful flow, three-part structure, scenic setting, and location on a heavily visited international border.
