Which singer led Mudhoney during the band’s classic grunge era?

The story behind the answer

Mark Arm led Mudhoney as its singer during the band’s classic grunge era.

Arm co-founded Mudhoney in Seattle in 1988 with guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Matt Lukin and drummer Dan Peters. Lukin was later replaced by Guy Maddison, while drummer Steve Shelley became associated with the group’s early recordings before Dan Peters returned to the lineup.

Arm had already been involved in Seattle’s underground music scene through Green River, a pioneering band that included future members of Pearl Jam. Mudhoney’s combination of punk energy, distorted guitars and garage-rock rawness made it one of the most influential bands on the Sub Pop label.

Mark Lanegan is often confused with Arm because Lanegan fronted Screaming Trees, another important Seattle-area grunge band. Chris Cornell led Soundgarden, and Layne Staley was Alice in Chains’ original lead vocalist.
