Which river flows over Switzerland’s Rhine Falls near the town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall?

The story behind the answer

The Rhine River flows over Switzerland’s Rhine Falls near the town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall.

Rhine Falls is one of Europe’s largest waterfalls by volume. It lies on the High Rhine in the canton of Schaffhausen, close to the border with Germany. The water drops over a resistant limestone formation and splits around prominent rocky outcrops.

The falls are about 23 metres high and 150 metres wide. Their flow varies considerably with the seasons, with the largest volumes usually occurring after snowmelt and periods of heavy rain.

The waterfall is sometimes confused with the larger river rapids farther upstream or with Switzerland’s many alpine cascades. Rhine Falls is specifically the broad cataract on the Rhine near Schaffhausen.
