Which record label released Mudhoney’s debut album Mudhoney in 1989?

The story behind the answer

Sub Pop released Mudhoney’s self-titled debut album in 1989.

Mudhoney formed in Seattle from members of Green River and other local bands. The group became one of Sub Pop’s defining acts, combining distorted guitar, punk energy, and a deliberately rough sound. Its first full-length album followed the band’s influential 1988 debut EP, Superfuzz Bigmuff.

Sub Pop was founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman and played a major role in documenting Seattle’s underground music scene. The label also released early work by Nirvana, Soundgarden, and other Northwest bands. Mudhoney’s album is sometimes confused with the band’s earlier EP because both helped establish its reputation, but the 1989 LP is the self-titled release issued by Sub Pop.
