Which Portuguese bridge over the Tagus is about 17.2 kilometres long?
Answer
Vasco da Gama Bridge
Answer
Vasco da Gama Bridge
The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the Portuguese bridge over the Tagus that is about 17.2 kilometres long.
It crosses the broad Tagus estuary east of Lisbon, linking Sacavém with Montijo and helping divert traffic from the older 25 de Abril Bridge. The crossing includes the main bridge, approach viaducts, and other connected structures, so its full length is much greater than its central cable-stayed section.
The bridge opened on 29 March 1998, just before Lisbon hosted Expo 98. It was named after Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese navigator whose voyage reached India by sea in 1498.
The 25 de Abril Bridge is also in Lisbon and is often confused with it, but that bridge is a suspension bridge farther west. The Vasco da Gama Bridge is chiefly recognized for its great overall length and distinctive cable-stayed design.
