Which bridge in New York City has the longest suspension-bridge main span in the United States?

The story behind the answer

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge has the longest suspension-bridge main span in the United States.

The bridge connects Staten Island and Brooklyn across the Narrows in New York Harbor. It opened in 1964, with the lower deck added in 1969. Its main span measures 1,298 metres, and its two towers rise about 211 metres above the water.

The bridge was named for Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Italian explorer who entered New York Harbor in 1524. In 2018, the spelling of his name in the official bridge name was changed to include the second “z” in Verrazzano.

It is often confused with the George Washington Bridge, which carries traffic between Manhattan and New Jersey. The George Washington Bridge is also a major suspension bridge, but the Verrazzano-Narrows has the longer main span.
