Which bridge links the Danish island of Zealand with the Swedish coast across the Øresund Strait?

The story behind the answer

The Øresund Bridge links Denmark’s Zealand with Sweden’s Skåne region across the Øresund Strait.

It opened in 2000 as part of a combined road-and-rail connection between Copenhagen and Malmö. The crossing includes a cable-stayed bridge, an artificial island called Peberholm and the Drogden Tunnel. This unusual arrangement allows ships to use the main navigation channel and gives aircraft safe clearance near Copenhagen Airport.

The bridge section is about 7.8 kilometres long, while the complete link measures roughly 16 kilometres. Road traffic uses the upper deck, and railway tracks run below it. The international connection has made the two metropolitan areas more closely integrated.

The Øresund Bridge is not the same as Denmark’s Great Belt connection, which links Zealand with Funen. Both are major Danish transport projects, but only Øresund crosses between Denmark and Sweden.
