Which Peter Jackson film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 78th Academy Awards?

The story behind the answer

King Kong won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 78th Academy Awards.

Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake used extensive digital effects to create Kong, the creatures of Skull Island, and large-scale action sequences in New York. Kong was developed with performance-capture work by Andy Serkis, whose physical acting helped shape the giant ape’s expressions and behaviour.

The film won three Oscars: Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. It competed for visual-effects honours against The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and War of the Worlds.

This award is sometimes confused with the visual-effects success of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. The Return of the King won the same category at the 76th Academy Awards, while The Two Towers won it at the 75th. King Kong’s victory was therefore a separate recognition for Weta’s work.
