Which Oregon waterfall is the tallest in the state’s Multnomah County, with a total drop of 189 metres?

The story behind the answer

Multnomah Falls is the Oregon waterfall in Multnomah County with a total drop of 189 metres.

The falls descend in two major stages from Larch Mountain into the Columbia River Gorge. The upper section is about 165 metres high, while the lower section is approximately 21 metres; a short sloping section between them brings the commonly cited total to 189 metres.

Multnomah Creek supplies the water. Its flow is supported by rainfall, snowmelt, and underground springs, so the appearance of the falls changes through the year. The basalt cliffs around the gorge were shaped by repeated Ice Age floods and volcanic activity.

A historic footbridge crosses the creek below the upper plunge. The waterfall is one of the Columbia River Gorge’s most visited landmarks and lies close to the Portland metropolitan area, making it unusually accessible for a major waterfall.
