Which Nirvana song was released as the lead single from In Utero?

The story behind the answer

Nirvana released “Heart-Shaped Box” as the lead single from In Utero.

The song was issued in August 1993, several weeks before In Utero arrived in September. It introduced listeners to the band’s harsher, less polished sound after the enormous commercial success of Nevermind. The single reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and became one of Nirvana’s best-known songs.

Kurt Cobain wrote “Heart-Shaped Box,” and the lyrics have often been discussed in connection with his relationship with Courtney Love. The song’s unusual title came from heart-shaped boxes associated with gifts and personal memories, rather than from a formal musical term.

The music video was directed by Anton Corbijn and used surreal religious and political imagery. A common mix-up is to identify “All Apologies” as the lead single because it became a major radio song later; however, “Heart-Shaped Box” was the first single released from the album.
