In Utero contains Nirvana’s songs “Serve the Servants” and “All Apologies.” It was the band’s third and final studio album, released by DGC Records on September 13, 1993.
The album followed the enormous success of Nevermind and presented a harsher, less polished sound. Steve Albini produced the original sessions at Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota, while Scott Litt later remixed “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” for the commercial release. That production history sometimes leads listeners to describe the entire album as simply an Albini mix, although the final record involved later mixing changes.
“Serve the Servants” opens the album, while “All Apologies” closes it. Other major tracks include “Heart-Shaped Box,” “Rape Me,” and “Pennyroyal Tea.” In Utero reached number one in the United States and United Kingdom, confirming Nirvana’s commercial importance while retaining a deliberately abrasive edge.
