Which New Zealand waterfall drops 580 metres from Lake Quill into Milford Sound’s valley?

The story behind the answer

Sutherland Falls is the New Zealand waterfall that drops 580 metres from Lake Quill into Milford Sound’s valley.

The waterfall is in Fiordland National Park on New Zealand’s South Island. Water leaves Lake Quill and falls in several stages toward the valley of the Arthur River, near Milford Sound. The total descent is commonly given as 580 metres.

Sutherland Falls became accessible to visitors after the Milford Track was developed as a walking route. The track approaches the falls from the Mackinnon Pass area, although weather and terrain can make the journey demanding.

The falls are often confused with Browne Falls, another very tall waterfall in Fiordland. Browne Falls is generally associated with Doubtful Sound, while Sutherland Falls is the celebrated waterfall beside the Milford Track.
