Which mountain range is home to Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town?
Answer
Cape Fold Belt
Answer
Cape Fold Belt
Table Mountain is part of South Africa’s Cape Fold Belt.
The Cape Fold Belt is a series of folded mountain ranges in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. Table Mountain, overlooking Cape Town, is one of its best-known landmarks. The belt extends for hundreds of kilometres and includes ranges such as the Hex River, Langeberg, Outeniqua, and Swartberg mountains.
Table Mountain’s flat summit is formed mainly from resistant sandstone. The surrounding folded rocks were shaped by immense geological forces, while later erosion exposed the hard sandstone layers that give the mountain its distinctive profile. The mountain is also famous for its rich fynbos vegetation.
A frequent confusion is with the Drakensberg, South Africa’s much higher eastern escarpment. The Drakensberg includes the country’s highest peaks, but it does not contain Table Mountain. Table Mountain National Park protects much of the local landscape, which is part of the Cape Floristic Region.
