Which mountain range contains Kita-dake, Japan’s second-highest mountain?

The story behind the answer

The Southern Alps of Japan contain Kita-dake, Japan’s second-highest mountain.

Kita-dake rises to 3,193 metres in Yamanashi Prefecture on Honshu. It is the highest summit of the Akaishi Mountains, which are also commonly called the Southern Alps of Japan. Only Mount Fuji is higher in Japan.

The Southern Alps are one of Japan’s three major alpine ranges, alongside the Northern Alps and Central Alps. Kita-dake is often confused with Yarigatake, a famous pointed summit in the Northern Alps, or with Hotaka-dake, another major Northern Alps peak. The Southern Alps are known for steep valleys, high ridges, and the presence of several peaks exceeding 3,000 metres.
