Which mountain range is crossed by the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy?

The story behind the answer

The Brenner Pass crosses the Alps between Austria and Italy.

At about 1,370 metres, the Brenner Pass is one of the lowest and most important routes across the main Alpine chain. It connects Innsbruck in Austria with the Italian town of Bolzano through the Wipptal and Eisack valleys. The pass has long been valued because its relatively gentle route is easier to cross than many higher Alpine corridors.

The Alps arc across central Europe for roughly 1,200 kilometres. They occupy territory in eight countries: France, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia. Mont Blanc is their highest summit.

The Brenner route mattered to Roman armies, medieval travellers, merchants, and modern rail and road transport. It is sometimes confused with the Gotthard Pass in Switzerland, another major Alpine crossing, but the Brenner specifically links Austria and Italy.
