Which mountain range includes the Three Sisters volcanoes in Oregon?
Answer
The Cascade Range
Answer
The Cascade Range
The Cascade Range includes the Three Sisters volcanoes in central Oregon.
The Three Sisters are three major volcanic peaks—North Sister, Middle Sister and South Sister—within the central Oregon Cascades. South Sister is the tallest of the group, reaching 3,157 metres. The peaks form part of the Cascade volcanic arc, which extends from British Columbia through Washington and Oregon into northern California.
The Cascades were created largely by the subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate beneath the North American Plate. This tectonic setting has produced stratovolcanoes, lava fields and geothermal features. The Three Sisters Wilderness surrounds the mountains and protects a landscape of glaciers, alpine lakes and volcanic rock. They are sometimes confused with California’s Sierra Nevada because both ranges contain high granite and volcanic terrain, but the Three Sisters are unmistakably part of the volcanic Cascade chain.
