Which mountain range includes Mount Elbrus and extends across southern Russia and Georgia?

The story behind the answer

The Greater Caucasus includes Mount Elbrus and extends across southern Russia and Georgia.

The Greater Caucasus is the principal northern mountain chain of the Caucasus system. It runs for more than 1,100 kilometres between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Mount Elbrus, at 5,642 metres, is its highest summit and is commonly recognized as the highest mountain in Europe under the geographic convention that places the Europe–Asia boundary along the Caucasus crest.

The range is distinct from the Lesser Caucasus, which lies farther south. The two are separated by lowlands and river valleys, including areas around Georgia and Azerbaijan. The Greater Caucasus contains extensive glaciers, high volcanic peaks, deep gorges, and major watersheds.

Mount Elbrus is a dormant stratovolcano with two summits, the western summit being higher. Confusion often arises because “Caucasus” can mean the entire region or mountain system, while “Greater Caucasus” identifies the specific northern chain containing Elbrus.
