Which mountain range contains the Pamir Plateau and Ismoil Somoni Peak?
Answer
Pamir Mountains
Answer
Pamir Mountains
The Pamir Mountains contain the Pamir Plateau and Ismoil Somoni Peak.
Ismoil Somoni Peak rises to 7,495 metres and is the highest mountain in Tajikistan and the Pamir Mountains. It was known during the Soviet period as Communism Peak and was renamed in 1998 after Ismoil Somoni, the founder of the Samanid state. The summit lies in Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan region.
The Pamirs occupy a major highland knot in Central Asia, where the Himalayas, Karakoram, Hindu Kush, Tian Shan, and Kunlun systems approach one another. Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China are associated with the wider Pamir region. The plateau is often called the “Roof of the World,” a phrase also applied more broadly to high Central Asian terrain. The Pamirs are distinct from the Tian Shan, whose highest summit is Jengish Chokusu, and from the Karakoram, home to K2.
