Which mountain range contains Mulhacén, the highest mountain in mainland Spain?

The story behind the answer

The Sierra Nevada contains Mulhacén, the highest mountain in mainland Spain.

Mulhacén rises to 3,479 metres in Andalusia. It is the highest point on the Iberian Peninsula, although Spain’s highest point overall is Teide on the island of Tenerife.

The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in southern Spain, stretching across Granada and Almería provinces. Its name means “snowy range,” and several summits retain snow well into the year despite the range’s Mediterranean setting.

A frequent mistake is to call Mulhacén Spain’s highest mountain without qualification. Teide is higher at 3,715 metres, but it is located in the Canary Islands rather than on mainland Spain.
