Which mountain range contains Mount Wilhelm, Papua New Guinea’s highest peak?

The story behind the answer

The Bismarck Range contains Mount Wilhelm, Papua New Guinea’s highest peak at 4,509 metres.

The range lies in the central highlands of New Guinea, and Mount Wilhelm is located in Chimbu Province near the boundary with Madang Province. Its summit is part of a rugged landscape shaped by tropical weather, steep valleys, and high-altitude lakes.

Mount Wilhelm was named during a German expedition in the nineteenth century, when the area was part of German New Guinea. The Bismarck Range itself honors Otto von Bismarck, the German statesman.

The Bismarck Range is not the same as the Owen Stanley Range, which forms the southeastern spine of Papua New Guinea and includes Mount Victoria. Papua New Guinea’s highest mountains are cooler and more alpine than many travelers expect because they rise thousands of metres above the equatorial lowlands.
