Which mountain range contains Mount Kilimanjaro?
Answer
Eastern Rift mountains
Answer
Eastern Rift mountains
Mount Kilimanjaro belongs to the Eastern Rift mountains, a volcanic mountain region associated with the Eastern Branch of the East African Rift. Its highest point, Uhuru Peak, reaches 5,895 metres in Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif made up of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the central cone and contains Uhuru Peak. Although the mountain is often discussed as a single peak, its broad structure is the result of multiple volcanoes that developed close together.
Kilimanjaro is frequently grouped loosely with East Africa’s major mountain ranges, but it is not part of the Rwenzori Mountains or the Drakensberg. It stands isolated above the surrounding plains, making its snow-capped summit especially prominent. The mountain lies inside Kilimanjaro National Park and was first climbed by Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller and Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo in 1889.
