Which mountain range contains Mount Guna, one of the highest peaks in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region?
Answer
Ethiopian Highlands
Answer
Ethiopian Highlands
Mount Guna is part of the Ethiopian Highlands in northern Ethiopia.
Mount Guna rises to approximately 4,120 metres in the Amhara Region. It is a prominent highland summit east of Lake Tana and is associated with the volcanic uplands that dominate much of Ethiopia’s northwestern interior.
The Ethiopian Highlands were built largely from extensive volcanic activity connected with the East African Rift system. Thick layers of basalt were later cut by rivers and erosion, producing deep gorges, escarpments, and isolated high plateaus known as ambas. The region is sometimes called the “Roof of Africa.”
Mount Guna should not be confused with Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest mountain, which is in the Simien Mountains. The Simien range is itself part of the broader Ethiopian Highlands, so the names describe related but different geographic scales.
