Jengish Chokusu is the highest peak in the Tian Shan mountain range.
Jengish Chokusu rises to 7,439 metres on the Kyrgyzstan–China border. Its Kyrgyz name means “Victory Peak”; the mountain is also known by the Russian name Pik Pobedy and the Chinese name Tomur Peak. It is the highest point in Kyrgyzstan.
The summit stands in the eastern Tian Shan near the massive South Inylchek Glacier. The range stretches across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China, forming one of the major mountain systems of Central Asia.
Jengish Chokusu is distinct from Khan Tengri, another famous Tian Shan peak. Khan Tengri has a striking pyramidal shape and is often considered the range’s most beautiful mountain, but its rock summit is lower at 6,995 metres. A layer of ice raises Khan Tengri’s capped height to about 7,010 metres.
