Which mountain range contains Jabal Shams, the highest mountain in Oman?
Answer
Al Hajar Mountains
Answer
Al Hajar Mountains
Jabal Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, is part of the Al Hajar Mountains.
Jabal Shams means “Mountain of the Sun” in Arabic and reaches about 3,009 metres. It is located in the western Hajar range, near Oman’s famous Wadi Ghul, often called the Grand Canyon of Arabia. The mountain’s upper slopes and deep gorges make the area a major destination for hiking and scenic tourism.
The Al Hajar Mountains form a broad arc across northern Oman and extend into the United Arab Emirates. They are geologically unusual because they expose rocks from oceanic crust and the upper mantle, including material associated with the Semail ophiolite. The range helps separate Oman’s interior from the coastal plain around the Gulf of Oman. Jabal Shams is sometimes confused with Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, but Jebel Jais belongs to the same wider Hajar system and lies across the border.
