Which mountain range contains Cerro El Potosí, the highest peak of Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental?

The story behind the answer

The Sierra Madre Oriental contains Cerro El Potosí, the highest peak of this mountain range.

Cerro El Potosí rises to approximately 3,713 metres in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. The mountain is part of a long chain of folded sedimentary rocks that runs along northeastern Mexico, roughly parallel to the Gulf of Mexico. Its slopes support distinctive pine and fir habitats despite the surrounding semi-arid climate.

The Sierra Madre Oriental extends from the border region of Texas and Mexico southward toward the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. It forms one of Mexico’s principal mountain systems and influences rainfall, ecosystems, and regional climate.

It is easy to confuse this range with the Sierra Madre Occidental, which lies west of Mexico’s central plateau. The two ranges are separated by the Mexican Plateau and have different highest summits and geological histories.
