Which mountain range contains Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom?

The story behind the answer

Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, lies in the Grampian Mountains.

Ben Nevis reaches 1,345 metres above sea level and stands near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The mountain is the collapsed remains of a massive Devonian volcano, and its summit area contains the ruins of a nineteenth-century observatory.

The Grampian Mountains occupy much of central and northern Scotland. They include several famous Highland groups and peaks, but Ben Nevis is the highest summit in the entire United Kingdom. Its popular Mountain Track begins near Glen Nevis and is one of Britain’s busiest mountain routes.

The Pennines are England’s principal north–south upland chain, while the Cambrian Mountains are in Wales. Both are separate from the Grampians, so the country’s highest mountain should not be assigned to either of them.
