Which Lisbon bridge, opened in 1998, is named after Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama?

The story behind the answer

The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the Lisbon bridge opened in 1998 and named after Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.

It crosses the Tagus estuary east of central Lisbon and forms part of a major road connection around the city. Its long viaduct and approach sections extend across wetlands and shallow water, requiring extensive foundations and environmental planning.

The bridge was inaugurated during Expo ’98, the Lisbon world’s fair that marked the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. At roughly 17.2 kilometres, it is the longest bridge in the European Union by total length, although individual spans elsewhere can be longer.
