Which Houston singing group did Beyoncé join before Destiny’s Child?

The story behind the answer

Before Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé joined the Houston singing group Girl’s Tyme.

Girl’s Tyme was formed in Houston in 1990 and included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and several other young performers at different points. The group competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, but it lost in the group category. That televised setback did not end the members’ ambitions; instead, it became part of the group’s early development story.

The lineup and name changed as the performers pursued a recording career. In 1996, the group was renamed Destiny’s Child, a name associated with a more streamlined lineup and a new phase of professional management. Some accounts write the earlier name as Girl’s Tyme, including the apostrophe, while casual references sometimes omit or alter the punctuation. Girl’s Tyme is therefore distinct from Destiny’s Child, not an alternate title for the later group.
