Beyoncé’s 2016 album that inspired a film project was Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, alongside an hour-long film of the same name broadcast on HBO. The album combines songs with poetry, visual imagery, and themes involving identity, relationships, Black womanhood, and cultural history.
Its music draws on R&B, rock, country, blues, reggae, hip-hop, and other traditions. The project’s visual presentation helped popularize the description of Lemonade as a visual album.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 59th Grammy Awards. It lost that award to Adele’s 25, while Beyoncé won Best Urban Contemporary Album for Lemonade.
