Which film did Beyoncé join in 2006 as Deena Jones?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé played Deena Jones in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls is a musical drama directed by Bill Condon and adapted from the stage musical of the same name. It follows a fictional female singing group whose rise reflects aspects of the history of Motown and other 1960s music-industry stories.

Beyoncé’s Deena Jones begins as a member of the Dreams and eventually becomes the group’s lead singer and a major star. The cast also included Jennifer Hudson as Effie White, Jamie Foxx as Curtis Taylor Jr., and Eddie Murphy as James “Thunder” Early. Hudson won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

The film is often confused with Beyoncé’s later music-centered acting roles, including Cadillac Records, in which she played singer Etta James. Dreamgirls instead gave her the fictional role of Deena and featured songs such as “Listen.”
