Which historic stone bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, crosses the Neretva River?

The story behind the answer

Stari Most is the historic stone bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, that crosses the Neretva River.

The Ottoman-era bridge was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and built between 1557 and 1566 by architect Mimar Hayruddin, a student of the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. Its single stone arch spans the river and became the defining landmark of Mostar.

Stari Most was destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993. An international reconstruction project used original stones recovered from the river alongside new materials and traditional techniques. The rebuilt bridge opened in 2004.

The name means “Old Bridge” in Bosnian. It is sometimes confused with Mostar’s wider historic old town, but Stari Most specifically refers to the bridge itself. UNESCO added the bridge and surrounding Old Bridge Area to its World Heritage List in 2005.
